Half a Door

This weekend brought the completion of the roofing — shingles and ridge vent. It was a great feeling to have that behind me.This morning I went back to Home Depot to get the wood and hardware for the door, workbench and side soffit.
Once everything was unloaded, I started work on the door. The door is made from tongue and groove 1×6’s. It’s held together with 1×4’s in a Z-pattern on the back. The most difficult part is getting the 45-degree angle cut in the proper location. To help, I used the sections I cut out of the siding for the doorway as a pattern.

Left portion of roof is shingled
As the weeks go by I am getting less and less productive on the shed. I worked two half days on it which resulted in getting the trim around the window and about 70% of the roof shingled. All I can say after the latest work being performed, “I never want to be a roofer.” That black felt and the dark shingles get wicked hot. I think that is the one reason I probably didn’t work as long this weekend. This is one time I wish it wasn’t so sunny.
I know I am in the home stretch with just the remainder of the shingles to finish up, then get the soffit hung, the door and ramp built, and finally the trim on the corners put up.

Our largest tomato ever picked from our garden.
This evening we picked our biggest tomato of the summer. We’ve been eying this big boy for the past couple weeks. A couple more days may have gotten this bad boy a bit more red, but not risking the birds from finding it, we picked it and will let it ripen a bit more over the next couple days.
The next task will be to keep this out of the reach of our tomato-lovin’ boy Henry!

Window installed into the rear of the shed / Saturday, August 9, 2008
The shed building continues as I enter my third weekend. This weekend will not be as productive for Saturday is Larry and Kelly’s shower and Sunday I have an assignment for the Examiner — covering a game at the Ripken World Series that features a team from Harford County.
Friday, Aug 08
Today I was able to complete hanging all the siding on the walls, with all that remains is the front and rear gables. I also cut out where the window and door will go.
Saturday, Aug 09
This morning began with staining the last two remaining pieces of of T1-11 siding, which will be used to fill in the gable ends. Once that was complete, Linda stained the right side of the shed and I installed a drip edge on the front.
Once complete, I put up the Z-flashing and nailed up the gable siding on the front.
I then worked on the window, placing that into the rough opening in the rear.
Finally, I installed the siding on the gable end in the rear, cleaned up the area and called it a day.
